Protaetia cuprea is a beetle with a body length of approximately 1.65 centimetres and a mass of 0.66 grams. The body is broad and fairly rounded, with a width of 9.9 millimetres and a height of 6.8 millimetres. The wing cases (elytra) are about 11.3 millimetres long and 4.8 millimetres wide. The membranous flight wings are notably longer at 19.2 millimetres, possessing an area of 112.3 square millimetres and an aspect ratio of 2.85. The head measures 3.7 millimetres in length and 3.4 millimetres in width, with small eyes (area 0.58 square millimetres) and short, stout mandibles (aspect ratio 0.306). The legs are moderately built: the hind femur is 5.3 millimetres long and the hind tibia 4.8 millimetres. A distinctive feature is the dense hairiness on the ventral abdomen, while the dorsal surfaces of the head, pronotum, and abdomen are entirely hairless. There is no evidence of sexual dimorphism in the measured traits.
