A herbaceous perennial with broad leaves, growing about half a metre tall in sunny, dry, calcareous meadows. Salvia pratensis is a herbaceous, non-woody plant reaching approximately 0.48 metres in height. The broad leaves have an average blade area of around 69 cm². Inflorescences appear from April to July, bearing flowers that offer both nectar and pollen – each rated 5 on the available value scale. It is adapted to full sun, dry moisture levels and alkaline, moderately fertile soil (nutrient score 4). The species colonises low-disturbance extensive grasslands and dry meadows, where it associates with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Its diaspores weigh about 2.2 mg, suggesting wind or gravity dispersal over modest distances.
